Your compassion and guidance will help support survivors, their friends, their families and other concerned community members as they begin their healing journey. The first step is often the most difficult and you can ease that by reducing their isolation and letting them know they are not alone. You will connect with our clients through our 24/7 helpline, in person as a walk-in client or as a referral through our law enforcement referral program. Greet clients and residents while you monitor the safety and security of our emergency domestic violence shelter facility. If you remain calm in emergency situations and want to be part of a team committed to strengthen and empower the families using our services, this may be the position for you. Our current openings are primarily weekend and overnight hours in addition to weekday and holiday coverage as needed. Great for students – provides flexibility to study during down time! DAIS Shelter Advocates work to ensure that victims of intimate partner violence and their children staying in our emergency shelter have a safe, dignified and empowered experience as they work to address the impact of intimate partner violence in their lives.
Primary responsibilities that contribute to a safe, dignified, and empowered experience for clients include:
• Maintaining cleanliness in shelter common areas, including the shelter kitchen; engaging clients to participate in efforts
• Cleaning and preparing rooms for client intakes
• Assisting clients with daily living needs
• Understanding and utilizing principles of trauma informed care and the empowerment philosophy of advocacy to support clients
• Conducting shelter intakes and shelter orientations
• Supporting other client and crisis services as needed, including providing help line coverage, monitoring security cameras, and providing building access to shelter clients
• Communicating shelter rules and communal living guidelines to clients and addressing difficulties or problems that arise
• Maintaining professionalism and professional boundaries with clients and staff alike
• Demonstrating humility
